Cricket Stadium and Academy to be Built on Umred Road in

Umred Stadium

Nagpur | December 16, 2022

Nagpur is set to strengthen its sports infrastructure with the development of a new cricket stadium and cricket academy on Umred Road. After the international cricket stadium at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, this will be another major cricket facility in the district.

The proposal to build the stadium and academy was approved during a meeting of the Nagpur Improvement Trust board held on Thursday. The proposal received unanimous approval from the board members, marking an important step toward the development of sports infrastructure in the region.

Location Yet to Be Finalized

Although the exact location has not been finalized yet, authorities are exploring potential land near the Umred Toll Naka area for the construction of the stadium and academy. Earlier, the idea was to build a multi-purpose sports complex where games like cricket, football, hockey, and other sports could be played.

However, due to differences of opinion among some members, the final decision was taken to build only a cricket stadium along with a dedicated cricket academy at the site.

Meeting with Stakeholders Planned

Officials have indicated that further discussions will soon take place with Nitin Gadkari and the Vidarbha Cricket Association to finalize future plans and move the project forward.

Currently, Nagpur has two main cricket stadiums located in Jamtha and Civil Lines. The proposed stadium on Umred Road will further enhance training and match facilities for budding cricketers in the region.

Several Development Proposals Approved

The meeting was chaired by Manoj Kumar Suryavanshi and was attended by officials including Dr. Vipin Itankar, MLA Mohan Mate, Sandeep Itkelwar, and Supriya Thool from the town planning department.

Several other development proposals were also approved during the meeting, including:

  • Allocation of land for an acupressure college

  • Establishment of a care center for pets and animals

  • Granting authority to approve medical reimbursement bills up to ₹3 lakh

  • Plans to convert temporary shops on Central Bazar Road into permanent leases through an auction system

  • Approval of ₹3.71 crore for construction of an art gallery and reading hall at the Sant Jagnade Maharaj Memorial

  • Approval of ₹50.73 lakh for construction of a protective wall along a drainage canal in Chikhli under the layout fund scheme

Warning Issued to Contractor Company

During the meeting, officials also discussed an issue related to the Futala Musical Fountain project. The contractor company had reportedly printed invitation cards for a trial show without mentioning the names of prominent dignitaries, including Nitin Gadkari.

The trust had issued a notice to the company, and although the company responded, the explanation was considered unsatisfactory. Authorities warned the company not to repeat such actions in the future.

New Name for E-Library

It was also decided to name the Manevada E-Library building as Deendayal Upadhyaya E-Library. Additionally, departmental officers of the trust have been granted authority to register FIRs in police stations when required.

Boost for Sports Development

The upcoming cricket stadium and academy on Umred Road are expected to provide better training infrastructure for young players and strengthen Nagpur’s reputation as a growing hub for cricket in central India. Once completed, the project will support sports development and create new opportunities for aspiring cricketers in the region.
